The largest of the ancient Mayan cities, Tikal was once one of the major cultural and population centers in Mesoamerica. Today it is one of Guatemala’s premier tourist attractions. Set amongst the dense Peten rainforest, the extensively excavated city houses over 3,000 ancient structures and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors hiking the trails of Tikal National Park not only have the opportunity to view the spectacular ruins, but also are able to see wildlife indigenous to the area such as toucans, parrots, monkeys and deer. Guests to Tikal can learn more about the fascinating Mayan culture at two area museums--the Stellae, with replicas of the pillar-like stone carvings of the same name, and the Sylvanus Morley, which exhibits Mayan artifacts made of pottery, bone, conch and jade.
